Århus Festival (known in Denmark as Århus Festuge) commissioned us to make a new piece entitled ‘Lyden af København’ (The Sound of Copenhagen). The 23 minute long sound collage premiered August 30th 2013 in Århus, Denmark.
DR Kunstklub organised the collection of sounds that we have used. In May and June anyone could contribute with their own recordings of various sounds of Copenhagen. We received the sound files beginning of July and with Mads at the steering wheel we have created this new piece, which is based almost entirely on the collected field recordings. The only exception is a few added piano parts.
This is the first of four parts of ‘Lyden af København‘. To listen to it in its entirety you will have to travel to Aarhus. There will be a listening station in the foyer of Musikhuset, from August 30th to September 8th in the opening hours of the concert hall.
Sections of it will also be played before a string of events during the festival – including our concert and film screening tomorrow. The show is almost sold out so act now if you want to go.
* please note that the US release date is June 18th 2013.
HAPPY RELEASE DAY!
We are so happy with this live album. Since the debut in Sydney Opera House a little over a year ago we have played 18 of these Piramida Concerts with different and amazing orchestras across the globe. To have it materialise into this live album The Piramida Concert with Copenhagen Phil is a beautiful thing for us. It feels great. We want to thank Copenhagen Phil and conductor André de Ridder for making this possible and we are also sending lots of love to Karsten Fundal and Missy Mazzoli who arranged the songs for orchestra.
The Piramida Concert will only be available digitally and as a limited edition deluxe double gatefold vinyl (one black, one white + CD inside), designed by Danish artists Hvass&Hannibal.
The live album is available now in all good record stores and also through our own webshop shop.efterklang.net.
Here is a nice little presentation of the vinyl edition:
One of our personal favorites on the new live album is the track THE LIVING LAYER + VÆLV, which as the titel suggests actually is two songs. The Living Layer by Efterklang and Vælv written by Karsten Fundal. You can listen to this via Soundcloud.
Some official info for you about this new release: The Piramida Concert by Efterklang & Copenhagen Phil was recorded live at Copenhagen’s Royal Academy of Music Concert Hall in October 2012. Over the course of two sold-out nights Efterklang – plus Peter Broderick, Katinka Fogh Vindelev and Budgie (Siouxsie and The Banshees) – teamed up with classical orchestra Copenhagen Phil and German conductor André de Ridder to perform the Danish act’s fourth album Piramida in its entirety. Staged for the first time at the Sydney Opera House in May 2012, the orchestral arrangements were written by fellow Dane Karsten Fundal and New York composer Missy Mazzoli. The Piramida Concert also features ‘So’, a song written during recording sessions for Piramida, and ‘Vælv’, a classical piece commissioned by Efterklang and composed by Karsten Fundal. The live performance was mixed to tape by Francesco Donadello in the Vox-Ton studio in Berlin.. The Piramida Concert will only be available digitally and as a limited edition deluxe double gatefold vinyl (one black, one white + CD inside).
