Listen to opening track ‘Cities of Glass’:

Here is the official announcement:

EFTERKLANG ARE BACK
‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ out Nov 4th

Following 16 sold-out shows of their explorative opera ‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ back in the summer of 2015, Efterklang are back with the opera’s official release; a genre-breaking collection of tracks composed in collaboration with the award winning composer Karsten Fundal, released November 4th on Tambourhinoceros.

‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ is Efterklang’s first release since they declared they were taking a break to reflect on their artistic practice and redefine their expression back in 2014.

Ahead of the release the band are streaming opening track ‘Cities of Glass’. Starting off lightly in a tonal and rhythmical language resembling the likes of Phillip Glass and Steve Reich, the track grows into an intense and dark expression. Featuring the album’s five different vocalists and array of vocal expressions, the track gives a taste of the work as a whole. Stream ‘Cities of Glass’ here: https://soundcloud.com/efterklang/cities-of-glass/s-RyaLc

Alongside the release Efterklang will be performing ‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ (in a concert version) with The Happy Hopeless Orchestra at selected European dates through February and March 2017:

Feb 22 – Copenhagen, Store Vega, Denmark
Feb 23 – Uppsala, Uppsala Konsert & Kongress, Sweden
Mar 02 – Eindhoven, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven / Cross Linx – Holland
Mar 03 – Groningen, De Oosterpoort / Cross Linx – Holland
Mar 04 – Rotterdam, De Doelen / Cross Linx – Holland
Mar 05 – Amsterdam, Muziekgebouw / Cross Linx – Holland
Mar 09 – London, Barbican – England
Mar 10 – Brussels, Ancienne Belgique – Belgium

Efterklang have carved a path as one of the most successful and progressive Danish bands, constantly trying to evolve through every record and seeking new grounds with their music. They have played in the Sydney Opera House, made films with Vincent Moon, created a sound installation in the famous restaurant Noma and performed the opera ‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ as part of the Copenhagen Opera Festival.

In the summer of 2015 ‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ was performed at 16 sold out nights in the 1000 m2 nuclear basement of the former Copenhagen Municipal Hospital. The opera was commissioned by Copenhagen Opera Festival who produced it in collaboration with the local theatre Sort/Hvid. The scenography was made by Marie Rosendahl Chemnitz and it was staged by Christian Lollike. The result was 16 horrifying, fascinating and mysterious evenings received by an enthusiastic audience and with great reviews to follow. The set-up in the basement can never be remade, but the opera will be granted new life with this release and the coming concerts with Efterklang & The Happy Hopeless Orchestra.

The lyrics for ‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ are written by the poet Ursula Andkjær Olsen and transformed into a musical piece by Efterklang and Karsten Fundal. Together they have experimented with musical tradition from both the rhythmical and classical world. This release shows you a way into the exciting world of opera as well as challenging the genre and the discography of Efterklang and Fundal.

The 10 tracks of the release span around 1 hour, and do not follow the traditional linear configuration of an opera. Karsten Fundal explains his thoughts on Leaves:

“We wanted to break down the conventions of the opera as a genre. The result is a song cycle about a cult located beneath the ground while the earth might be experiencing its downfall above ground. It’s about loss – loss of identity, loss of love and loss of life itself. We wanted to create an opera for the mood you’re put in when you on a beautiful autumn day see how a brown leaf falls from a tree in the garden – the beautiful swaying fall signifying that everything will perish.”

‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ features appearances from the legendary danish opera star Lisbeth Balslev, the countertenor Morten Grove Frandsen (one of Denmark’s most promising opera talents), Nicolai Elsberg (known for his formidable bass), and Katinka Fogh Vindelev (who has been touring with Efterklang for many years).

‘Leaves – The Colour of Falling’ was recorded by Francesco Donadello and Michael Bojesen was the conductor during the recordings.

LEAVES premieres Tonight

July 26, 2015 by Rasmus

More than two years of thinking, writing, composing, testing, preparing and rehearsing culminates tonight in Copenhagen with the premiere of the new opera LEAVES the colour of falling.

We have co-composed the opera together with Karsten Fundal and we will also be performing the opera as Efterklang together with a brilliant team of singers and musicians. All 14 performances are already sold out, but it looks like we will be able to do two extra performances. Watch the Facebook pages of Efterklang or Copenhagen Opera Festival for announcements about this.

LEAVES is a co-production between Copenhagen Opera Festival and theater Sort/Hvid. Ursula Ankjær Olsen has written the English lyrics. Christian Lollike has directed. Marie Rosendahl Chemnitz has designed the costumes and scenography.

Yesterday LEAVES was featured in the Danish TV news.

LEAVES – a new opera

May 12, 2015 by Rasmus

In the last year and a half we’ve been busy with our new band Liima, with The Lake Radio and the new festival By The Lake. Along with these new endeavours, we’ve also been working on something special as Efterklang.

We are very happy to introduce a new opera: LEAVES - the colour of falling. We have co-composed the opera together with Karsten Fundal and we will be on stage, as Efterklang, for all 14 performances this Summer in Copenhagen.

Because of the unusual location (an abandoned Cold War bunker) and nature of the opera only 60 tickets are sold per performance. Tickets are available here.

You can read a longer presentation of LEAVES and the great team behind it below.

LEAVES is a genre-crossing operatic production that will take place underground in a huge Cold War-era bunker beneath Copenhagen’s municipal hospital. Once used as a subterranean emergency hospital but long since abandoned, the audience will be led through the labyrinthine corridors that have been closed to the public for decades.

The eleven songs comprising LEAVES will be performed daily by Efterklang plus eight classically-trained musicians. The five vocalists will be Katinka Fogh VIndelev (soprano, We Like We), Lisbeth Balslev (soprano), Casper Clausen (Efterklang), Nicolai Elsberg (bass, Spillemændene) and Morten Grove Frandsen (countertenor).

Commissioned for the Copenhagen Opera Festival, the gala performance of LEAVES will be on July 26th, with a further 13 shows until August 8th. Each performance will be limited to sixty tickets.

LEAVES is composed by Karsten Fundal and Efterklang and directed by Christian Lollike from the theatre Sort/Hvid who are producing the opera in collaboration with Copenhagen Opera Festival.

English lyrics by Ursula Andkjær Olsen and set design by Marie Rosendahl Chemnitz.

More info.

Stream of Noma – new Efterklang piece

March 27, 2015 by Rasmus

‘Stream of Noma’ is an hour long sound piece created by Efterklang, and installed in the bathrooms at Restaurant Noma. The recordings were made by Efterklang both at the restaurant and at a local supplier’s chicken farm.

‘Stream of Noma’ features hundreds of recordings, made in September of 2013, which were layered to form an aural stream with 20 focal points. The focal points both reference and parallel the 20 servingsof Noma’s menu, and they vary in form and approach; some of them are clean field recordings, while others take a straight musical approach. Most of the focal points also use processed manipulations ofthe recordings which are then used as rhythmic or melodic elements or as samples for synths.

‘Stream of Noma’ is an abstraction of the Noma kitchen, the process—the circle, the suppliers, foragers, preparation— and the result is the menu. The piece tunnels a link between the kitchen and the diner, providing a behind-the-scenes glimpse, though both aural and abstract, at the mystique ofthe restaurant.

You can listen to an excerpt of ‘Stream of Noma’ below. If you want to hear the entire piece you will have to visit Restaurant Noma – and occupy the bathroom for 67 minutes.
