You never forget your first time. SXSW is almost all free during the day. Efterklang played 2 day free shows last year and 2 night shows that required wristbands or badges. Wristbands run about 120 and are reserved for locals. The badges get you into everything, and yes they run around 500. You don't need a badge to catch a show. check out sched when it comes out.http://sched.org/ Even some of the night shows or "showcases" you can pay $10 or so to get in for certain shows, it just depends on the venue.
